Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
World War Two trenches and banks visible on the higher ground of Silverland Hill on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2) and Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1969 (S3). Running around the northern, eastern and southern sides of the hill is a trench, 1-2m wide. The feature starts at TG 0821 4303 and then curves around the contour of the hill to TG 0824 4300. At this point the trench takes on a zigzag profile and continues to TG 0821 4299. A narrow bank of up-cast on the down-slope side is visible in places. A much wider bank can be seen to run from TG 0821 4304 to TG 0824 4302, measuring 40m long and 2m wide. To the north-west of the hill at TG 0820 4305 is a cluster of smaller slit trenches. All of these trenches are likely to be World War Two in date, although whether they were for training or defence is not clear, perhaps both.
S. Massey (NMP), 17 January 2003.
