Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Group of three large cropmark pits visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1969 (S1). One of these is roughly oblong in shape and is located at TG 0598 4184, measuring 6m by 5m. The other two pits are sub-angular and almost triangular in shape. The largest is centred on TG 0600 4184, and is 6m across and the other is approximately 5.5m across and is located at TG 0597 4182. The origin of these pits is uncertain. The cropmarks suggest that these ‘pits’ are sitting on top of a band of geological band, which appears raised in stereo. It is possible that these pits are pockets of another geology sitting within this. However it is also possible that the pits are archaeological in origin. Obviously it is not necessarily possible to date cropmark pits, without additional information. One possibility which is suggested by the size and apparent 'oblong' shape of one of the pits is that they are related sunken floored buildings, such as grubenhauser of a Saxon date. This is interpretation must be taken with great caution unless complementary chronological or cultural material is found associated with the site.
S. Massey (NMP), 20 January 2003.
