October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The fragmentary earthworks of a post-medieval sea defence bank are visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and still surviving in sections. This bank was once part of a much larger bank that ran along the Cley coast. Other sections of this bank are recorded under NHER 27083 and NHER 27753. The bank as mapped runs from TG 0544 4511 to TG 0519 4518, measuring 260m long and up to 7m wide. The bank would have continued to the west to TG 0502 4521 (and joined NHER 27083). However this section of the bank is not clearly visible on the 1946 aerial photographs as a chain of military structures and gun emplacements had been placed on top of, or cut into, the bank itself (HER 24184). At TG 0531 4512 an additional line of bank branches off to TG 0533 4508. It is hard to tell whether this stretch of bank is contemporary. Although it does not appear to be a World War Two military structure, so it is likely to be post-medieval in date also.
