Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A group possible World War Two structures are positioned on top of sea bank (NHER 27805) and visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and on 1988 BKS aerial photographs (S2). Centred on TG 0670 4474 on the 1946 aerial photographs (S1) there appears to be the remains of a structure. An L-shaped stretch of wall runs from TG 0671 4474 to TG 0671 4475, 7.5m, and then turns to the east and continues for a further 3m to TG 0671 4475. The structure itself, possible a wall, is between 0.5m and 1m wide. Two perpendicular elements are situated 6m to the north. A 6m long and 1m wide wall runs from TG 0670 4475 to TG 0669 4475. To the south of this is another L-shaped wall, 6m by 3m, from TG 0670 4474 to 0669 4474 and then continuing to TG 0669 447. It seems likely that these fragments of stonework are the remains of a World War Two defensive position, or pillbox, that was on top of the bank. To the south of this on the 1988 aerial photographs (S2) a possible structure is visible projecting out of the sand to the south of the bank at TG 0666 4472. The structure has some height and appears to be slightly oval or polygonal in shape, measuring 4m by 3m. This feature is not particularly visible on any other photography and therefore it could be of extremely recent origin. However it is possible that it is the remains of a World War Two structure that was previously dug in or covered by sand drift.
