Summary

A probable World War Two air raid shelter is visible as a structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and its location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was probably a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. It is not visible on recent aerial photographs of the site and has presumably been demolished or removed.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as a structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5237 0840. It lay in the back garden of 184 Palgrave Road. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter intended for the use of this particular household. It was a small surface structure, which can be distinguished from a normal outbuilding by its curved profile. It may have been an Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth, or a similar proprietary design. It is partially obscured on the consulted aerial photographs by vegetation or similar material. Recent aerial photographs of the area, for example (S2), demonstrate that the shelter has now been demolished or otherwise removed.
