Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible World War Two date on Salthouse heath visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). The site is not clear although it obvious that activity has recently been taking place and vehicle tracks lead up to the site. The earthworks seem to consist of a elliptical hollow or pit at TG 0720 4216, measuring 6m by 2m. Around this, mainly to the east, is a possible C-shaped banked area, 1.5m across. It is possible this is merely upcast from the dug out central feature. Although it may be the remains of a gun emplacement or similar military position, as the C-shaped feature is reminiscent of the embankments around other gun emplacements on the heath.
S. Massey (NMP), 15 April 2003.
