Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
An area of earthwork linear features consisting of banks and ditches visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1950 (S1) and Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1969 (S2). The majority of these earthworks are located to the southern end of the site. However one bank and ditch can clearly be seen to run from TG 07222 42873 to TG 07412 42736. These are both 235m long. The bank is approximately 3m wide and the ditch varies in width from 1.5-3m. The main area of linears runs in a band approximately 55m across from TG 0702 4256 to TG 0746 4254. These are all roughly parallel and are often very closely set, in particular the area centred on TG 0725 4254. At TG 07301 42540 some evidence of sequence is obvious with one bank and ditch cutting across one of these parallel linears. Another group of roughly parallel ditches, up to 115m long, is centred on TG 0747 4265. The date of these features is unknown although some hints on the age of them can be taken from the fact that many of the southern ditches appear to pre-date the road to Salthouse. The date of this road is not known, although it is presumably fairly old. Some of the more closely set banks and ditches could be ridge and furrow or evidence of some such similar agricultural practice, these may be medieval in date.
