Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of two large pits or hollows on the heath visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1950 (S1). The more westerly of the two is located at TG 0762 4201 and is oblong measuring 8m by 6m. The eastern hollow is at TG 0770 4202 and measures 6m by 4.5m. Other hollows have been excavated on the heath (NHER 6219) and interpreted as prehistoric ‘pit dwellings’ with flints and pot boilers. It is possible that this scooped feature is the remains of a working hollow or similar feature. It is also equally possible that it is a military feature, although it does not show any signs of being recent and fresh on any of the 1946 aerial photographs. It may also be an extraction pit of some sort, possibly medieval to post-medieval in date.
S. Massey (NMP), 9 May 2003.
