April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as a structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5233 0526. It lay in the back garden of 135 Suffolk Road, Gorleston-on-Sea. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of this particular household. It is visible as a small rectangular structure, which can be distinguished from a normal outbuilding by its apparently curved shape in profile. It may have been an Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth, or a similar proprietary design. Further shelters may have existed in other nearby gardens, such as the garden of Number 129 a short distance to the north, but nothing is clear enough on the consulted aerial photographs to warrant mapping. Recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), demonstrate that the shelter has now been levelled.
