Full Description
October 2003. Norfolk NMP.
A line of earthwork trenches and pits are visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2) on Muckleburgh Hill. All of these features appear to be World War Two training and defensive trenches and smaller weapons pits. They are situated to the south of a larger section of slit trench (NHER 38352). On the 1950 RAF aerial photographs (S2) later military earthworks are also visible, but these were not mapped as they post date World War Two.
Running from TG 0978 4310 to TG 0979 4310 is a 9m long and 1m wide ‘Z-shaped’ trench. To the immediate east of this is much smaller section of ‘V-shaped’ trench centred on TG 0979 4310. Along a similar alignment to the east is a line of five elongated pits and trenches, running from TG 0980 4311 to TG 0932 4311. The shortest of these measures 1m by 0.5m and the longest being 3m by 1m. Two further oval pits are visible along a slightly different alignment to the south-east. Both measure approximately 3m by 1.5m and are located at TG 0984 4311 and TG 0985 4311.
