Summary

A probable World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. It is first visible on aerial photographs taken in March 1944, but as these are the earliest consulted photographs of the area it may have been created some time earlier. The intended target may have been the railway line (NHER 13575) that once lay approximately 140m to the west, or the light anti aircraft battery emplaced on the railway embankment (NHER 19084). There is no evidence on recent aerial photographs of the site that the crater survives as an earthwork and it has probably been levelled.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork and disturbed ground on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5219 0523. The intended target may have been the railway line that once lay 140m to the west (NHER 13575), and/or the light anti aircraft battery emplaced on its embankment (NHER 19084). At the same time, as the feature was not a fresh earthwork in 1944, its identification as a bomb crater is not certain (it might instead be a modern pit, for example). Aerial photographs taken more recently (S4) and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the site now lies within the garden of 34 Burgh Road, Gorleston on Sea; there is no evidence that the crater still survives as an earthwork and it has probably been levelled.
