Summary

A World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. It is first visible on aerial photographs taken in March 1944, but as these are the earliest consulted photographs of the area it could have been created some months earlier. The site lies between two former railway lines, NHER 13574 270m to the west and NHER 13575 240m to the east: either of these might have been the intended target for the bombs. Aerial photographs taken more recently, together with modern Ordnance Survey maps, demonstrate that the site now underlies part of Harfreys Industrial Estate; the crater itself has presumably been levelled.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5176 0608. The crater does not appear to have been a particularly fresh earthwork on the earliest consulted photographs of the site (S1) and it was probably created several months, or even years, before they were taken. The intended target for the bombs may have been either of the two former railway lines that lay 270m to the west (NHER 13574) and 240m to the east (NHER 13575). Aerial photographs taken more recently (S3) and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the site now underlies part of Harfreys Industrial Estate; the crater itself has presumably been levelled.
