Summary

A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as a structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. There is no evidence on recent aerial photographs of the area that any part of the shelter now survives above ground.

Map

A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as a structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5240 0564. It lay in the back garden of 1 Common Road, Southtown. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of this particular household. It is visible as a small rectangular structure, which can be distinguished from a normal outbuilding by its apparently curved shape in profile. It may have been an Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth, or a similar proprietary design. At the same time, the shelter is partially obscured by shadows on the consulted aerial photographs, and therefore its interpretation remains rather uncertain. It is not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), and has presumably been levelled.
