Full Description
Barrow. In bulge of Hill Covert on highest land in parish, south of village, west of Brandon Road.
According to (S1) this was destroyed about 1929 or 1930, being on land taken for Ministry of Labour permanent camp Information from record card (S2).
March 1976. Field Observation.
Site now occupied by a saucer shaped depression with a shallow trench cut round for three quarters of the circumference. There were a good many flakes lying on the surface.
Marked on Ordnance Survey 1 inch map surveyed in 1896 (S3) but not on the 1906 edition (S4). Now a very large pit.
Information from record card (S5).
A. J. Lawson (NAU), 5 March 1976.
1950/51.
Aero engines dumped north of Cranwich Camp in area of this feature.
January/February 1996. Proposed metal-detecting survey to locate aero engines.
See letters and plan in file.
D.Gurney (NLA) 20 February 1996.
February 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Large extraction pit of an unknown date is principally seen on visualised lidar data from a recent (2015) survey (S6). Due to the complexity of this record the extraction pit has been mapped, however this type of feature is generally not mapped as part of this programme of investigation. No evidence of the barrow (mentioned above) has been recorded however the large extraction pit can be seen on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S7) and the lidar visualisations (S6). Further to the pit a small east-west aligned bank is seen to the north which most likely relates to a 20th century or modern boundary. A small mound is visible to the south west at TL 7745 9459 which may have possibly been the previously mentioned barrow; however this is unlikely and the mound most likely relates to the Second World War military activity to the south.
