Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible trackway or double ditched linear feature of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs to the southeast of Eccles-on-Sea (S1). The site is centred on TG 4147 2822. The ditches are approximately 50m in length and 6m apart and both follow a slightly sinuous course. To the immediate south is an area of cropmark field boundaries or drainage ditches (NHER 43427) of unknown definite date. This possible fragment of trackway bares no obvious relationship to these other cropmarks. However given the location of the cropmarks is on the upper edge of the alluvial and fen deposits associated with the Thurne Valley. It therefore must be borne in mind that these linear features may relate to drainage. The area is marked as Sea Common and Eccles Common on Faden’s map of 1797 (S2). To the east is an area of open water is also depicted and this is possibly a former Broad (NHER 43428), again illustrating the potential for features in this area to be related to drainage dating to the medieval period onwards.
