Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5228 0636. It lay in the back garden of 4 Tollgate Road, Southtown. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of this particular household. The earthwork mound, which was itself partially covered by vegetation, probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. What was probably a sunken entrance is visible on its west side. At the same time, the site is not particularly clear on the consulted aerial photographs and therefore its interpretation remains uncertain; it could instead have been an outbuilding. It is not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), and has presumably been levelled.
