Summary

A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork mound, probably covering a structure (and certainly incorporating a structural element), on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. It is not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the area and has presumably been levelled. Its site may have been partially built over.

A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork with a structural element on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5219 0684. It lay in the back garden 59 Southtown Road, Southtown. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of this particular household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. The earthwork mound probably covered a semi-sunken or surface-level structure; the latter almost certainly had a curved profile in shape. A small structural element visible at the east end of the shelter may have been part of this underlying structure or may represent reinforcement around the shelter’s entrance. The shelter is not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S2), and has presumably been levelled. Its site may have been partially built over.
