Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earth-covered structures on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5203 0662. They lay in the back gardens of 110 and 111 Gordon Road, Southtown. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of these particular households. In 1945 (S2) they are visible as bare or only lightly covered structures; these had a curved shape in profile and may have been Anderson shelters or a similar proprietary design. The structures had presumably been covered with earth during the war, hence the earthwork mounds visible in 1944 (S1). Neither of the shelters is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S3), and they were presumably levelled in the post-war period.
