Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Up to two probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5285 0876. The site lay in the front garden of 106 North Denes Road. This location, together with its small size, suggests that the shelter (or shelters) were private and intended for the use of this particular household. The site is visible as what appears to be two conjoined earthwork mounds, each of which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. (In places, the structures themselves may be visible, rather than their earth covering). It seems most likely that it represents two separate shelters lying side by side, but could instead have been a single, larger shelter. If the former is correct, the underlying structures could have been Anderson shelters or a similar proprietary design. It should be noted that the east side of the site was obscured by shadows on the consulted aerial photographs and the size and shape of the shelter(s) should therefore be regarded as approximate. The site was presumably levelled in the post-war period and no trace of it is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the area, for example (S2).
