Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as an earthwork and a structure on aerial photographs (S1), at TG 5274 0913 and TG 5276 0915. They lay in the back gardens of 45 Walpole Road and 100 Hamilton Road. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of these particular households. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. The shelter at 100 Hamilton Road is visible as an earthwork mound, probably covering a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. Judging by the shape of the mound, the underlying structure probably had a curved shape in profile and a flat, vertical façade at its north end. The shelter at 45 Walpole Road is visible as a small, rectangular, surface-level or semi-sunken structure, which is distinguished from a normal outbuilding by its curved shape in profile. It may have been an Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth. The shelters are not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, see (S2), and presumably were levelled after the end of the war.
