Summary

A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork, probably covering a structure, on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. It is not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site and was presumably levelled in the post-war period.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5268 0921. It lay in the back garden of 53 Hamilton Road. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of a particular household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. It is visible as an earthwork mound, which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. Details of its form are difficult to make out on the consulted aerial photographs, but the eastern half of the mound appears to have been higher than the western half. It is not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, see (S2), and has presumably been levelled.
