Summary

Three probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as structures on 1940s aerial photographs. Their small size and location within enclosed gardens suggest that they were private shelters, each intended for the use of a single family or household. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. They are not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the area and were presumably levelled in the post-war period.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Three probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as structures on aerial photographs (S1), between TG 5268 0937 and TG 5272 0937. They lay in the back gardens of 17, 20 and 21 Barnard Avenue. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of a particular household. All three are visible as small, rectangular, surface-level or semi-sunken structures, which are distinguished from ordinary outbuildings by their apparently curved shape in profile. They may have been Anderson shelters without their usual covering of earth, or similar proprietary designs. None of the shelters are visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, see (S2), and they have presumably been levelled.
