Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5302 0985. They lay in the back gardens of 20 and 22 Milton Road. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, each intended for the use of a particular household. The shelter at Number 22 is visible as an earthwork mound, which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. The shelter at Number 20 is visible as a semi-sunken structure within a pit or trench. Its curved shape in profile and flat, vertical façades at each end suggest that it was probably an Anderson shelter. The photograph was presumably taken during its removal at the end of the war. Further shelters may have lain in other nearby gardens, such as that belonging to Number 18, but nothing was convincing or clear enough on the consulted aerial photographs to warrant mapping. Neither of the shelters is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S2), and they have presumably been entirely levelled.
