Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two pit-like features are visible as vegetation marks and possibly also as low earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5218 0941. Their edges are poorly defined on the consulted aerial photographs, and consequently only their approximate extent has been mapped. Their function is unclear, but they could have resulted from the small-scale extraction of turf or estuarine deposits. Their date is also unknown, but they are unlikely to have been created prior to the medieval period, when the large-scale drainage of the marshes probably began. A possible third, larger pit may have lain to the north of the mapped features (at approximately TG 5219 0946) but the mark was too poorly defined and inconsistent to warrant mapping by the NMP. Aerial photographs taken in 1989 (S4) demonstrate that the site has now been levelled by ploughing.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 24 May 2006.
