Map

Hedenham Hall Farm
Marked as Manor House on the first edition one inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map dating to 1838 (S1). This small house on the north edge of the village beyond the church cannot in fact predate the map by many years. It is constructed of chequered bricks in Flemish bond with horizontal skintlings. The east façade is of three bays, two storeys with a central door. This leads into a staircase hall from which Regency doorcases lead to rooms to each side; the stairs are simple.

A rear wing, in fact larger than the main house, projects to the west giving an L-shape. The brickwork is similar to the main block but the windows have flat unarched lintels and the wing appears to be of the later 19th century. It is of two storeys with a stack against the main building and no internal features of interest. Possibly it was intended for farmworkers’ accommodation. Not of archaeological interest, but perhaps surprising it is not listed. Development plans in secondary file (S2).

June 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Although the present farmhouse is believed to date to the 1820s-1830s, a group of buildings are marked at this location on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3). These are shown at the northwestern end of what appears to be the present driveway to the farm. This evidence and the manor house name cited above make it likely that there was an earlier post medieval or medieval house at this site. A group of earthworks are present immediately to the east of the farm (NHER 43731) and a possible moat or fishpond lies 290m to the northwest (NHER 43730).
