Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible field boundaries of unknown, but possibly Roman date are visible on aerial photographs within arable to the north of the Wheelhouse, Potter Heigham (S1). The site is centred on TG 4251 2018. The site consists of a slightly curving double ditched feature, possibly forming a trackway through fields or a field boundary defined by two ditches, 80m long and 5m apart. A second double ditched feature runs perpendicular to this and joins it to the south. The northern end of the main double ditched boundary runs up to a single ditch. Several other single ditch fragments are also visible, the majority of which are aligned either along or perpendicular to the main double ditched feature. It seems likely that these ditches represent field boundaries or similar features of land division. The site is located just to the south of the former alluvial fens and therefore they are unlikely to be associated with drainage. The date of the cropmarks is unknown and the site is too fragmentary to offer any definite interpretation based on the appearance of the features, although a Roman date is possible. A nearby find of a Roman pottery sherd (NHER 18347) may also indicate a Roman date for the site.
