December 2006. Building Survey.
Programme of historic building recording conducted ahead of proposed development.
The western wall remains to the probable level of the wall plate, and measures 7.64 x 1.64m high and 450mm thick. On the external elevation there is a blocked window with segmental arch which has been formed in the blocking to a larger doorway. Adjacent to this are two blocked slit windows, all of which are contemporary with the construction of the barn. The internal elevation has a central window opening in the blocked doorway returning into the thickness of the wall. The timber lintel and cill boards remain in situ. A 30mm stepped plinth approximately 600mm above the present ground level runs along the face of the wall. The internal brickwork of the south-west corner and the top course of brickwork has recently been rebuilt. On the south elevation there is a short stub of wall 1.68m long and clearly formed part of a longer wall. There is one piece of Barnack limestone at a high level, which could be part of a coping.
The use of reused worked limestone is unusual given the local supply of carstone. The standing remains may date from the mid 17th or early 18th centuries.
See report (S2) for further details.
