Summary

The cropmarks of an undated enclosure and trackways are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Whinmere Plantation, Hickling. It is not clear whether this site represents a domestic enclosure or enclosed agricultural fields or paddocks. The date of the site is unknown, although it is possible that it date to the Iron Age to Roman periods. These ditches overlie or are slightly overlain by another set of field boundaries, also thought to date to roughly the same broad period (NHER 44807).

The cropmarks of an undated enclosure and trackways are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Whinmere Plantation, Hickling (S1-S2). It is not clear whether this site represents a domestic enclosure or enclosed agricultural fields or paddocks. The site is centred on TG 4086 2408. The date of the site is unknown, although it is possible that it date to the Iron Age to Roman periods. These ditches overlie or are slightly overlain by another set of field boundaries, also thought to date to roughly the same broad period (NHER 44807).

The site consists of a series of ditched linear features that possibly form a large rectangular enclosed area, measuring 110m by 100m. This larger area appears to be subdivided approximately in half by an internal ditch. The western and eastern sides of the enclosure appear to have double ditched boundaries, possibly forming trackways, 3-5m across, along the side of the enclosure or fields. To the south is a ditch running parallel to that of the main enclosure and this possibly also forms a trackway, 12m wide.
