NHER 44830 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Earthworks of medieval to post medieval field boundaries in Broome Place park

Earthworks of field boundaries of medieval to early post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These earthworks are centred on TM 3492 9236. A group of six parallel banks and ditches are present on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment in parkland at Broome Place (NHER 10642). It is likely that these earthworks are field boundaries of medieval to early post medieval date that pre-date the establishment of the park, possibly in the 18th century. The strip fields defined by the banks range from 19m to 50m in width and are up to 170m long. A sub-square earthwork platform measuring 25m across is present at TM 3484 9240. It lies at the northwest end of one of the fields and could be a building platform of medieval to post medieval date. To the southwest of this platform is a broad channel cut out of the natural slope of the hillside. This is 17m wide and up to 114m long. It is aligned towards the main front of Broome Place and is likely to be a landscaping feature to improve the view from, or perhaps of, the house.

The earthworks of medieval to early post medieval field boundaries, mapped by the previous NMP survey (see above), are also visible as earthworks on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2022 (S4). Additional field boundaries are also visible on the visualised lidar data to the west of Broome Place (NHER 10642), centred at approximately TM 3504 9257. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is likely that the features still survive as earthworks.
