Full Description
July 2006. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation undertaken prior to construction of all-weather sports pitch. From Context 1.
No archaeological features or deposits were observed.
A number of unstratified finds were recovered, including:
4 ?Early Neolithic flint blades and 4 blade-like flakes.
2 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint scrapers.
2 undatable late prehistoric flint scrapers, 2 retouched flakes, 8 retouched fragments, 2 flake cores and 45 flakes.
1 Roman brooch.
3 medieval pottery sherds, 3 coins, 1 strap clasp, 1 bar mount and 2 copper alloy vessel fragments.
9 post-medieval coins, 1 medallion (pierced coin of Napoleon III), 2 thimbles, 1 crotal bell, 1 buckle, 1 rowel spur and 2 belt mounts.
27 undatable iron tap slag fragments.
The finds recovered also included a discrete group of 129 post-medieval musket balls and 3 pieces of smaller shot. This collection included examples that had been fired and others that still had sprue marks.
