NHER 44856 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated linear ditches and possible Roman rectilinear enclosures

Cropmarks of undated ditches and possible rectilinear enclosures are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S7). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3385 9308. Six section of linear and curvilinear ditch cropmark are present. A section of linear ditch extends for 250m on a roughly north northwest to south southeast alignment. A second section of ditch is present parallel to it for a distance of 35m with a series of four short ditches joining the two. These short ditches create three adjacent enclosures measuring 6.5m wide by between 6.5m and 8.5m wide. The function of these enclosures is not certain, although it is possible that the cropmark represents a building adjoining a linear boundary and could be of Roman date. Other linear and curvilinear ditch cropmarks in this group are of unknown date, but are probably field boundaries.
