Full Description
July 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two defences is visible on aerial photographs located on marshes to the immediate east of the Haddiscoe Dam to the south of Haddiscoe Bridge (S1). The site is centred on TM 4523 9867 and is located on the edge of a former brickworks (NHER 15122). This site sits on the outer edge of a wider network of defences, see NHER 43670 for details.
The site consists of a possible gun emplacement at TM 4526 9865. This structure is suggested by an angular area of disturbed or worn ground with the possible remains of a concrete structure remaining forming an angular wall, which is reminiscent of light anti-aircraft gun emplacements. Two rectangular concrete structures, 6m by 4m and 3.5m by 2m, are located on a concrete platform alongside the hedge. Several other possible structures may present, although these cannot be seen as clearly and may relate to previous agricultural activity at the site. Two circular structures are visible, both surrounded by a circular worn area at TM 4525 9868 and TM 4522 9863. These are likely to be the remains of mobile or vehicle mounted searchlights associated with the gun emplacement. By the 1946 only the two rectangular concrete structures alongside the road are visible (S2) and by 1951 these have also been removed (S3).
