Summary

The earthworks of a circular mound of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs alongside the railway at Haddiscoe Junction. It is possible that this mound, which has a central cut in the centre, is associated with the railway junction and perhaps had a signal mounted on top. It may also relate to a drainage pump or similar structure that pre-dates the construction of the railway.

Map

The earthworks of a circular mound of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs alongside the railway at Haddiscoe Junction (S1). The site is centred on TM 4583 9856. It is possible that this mound, which has a central cut in the centre, is associated with the railway junction and perhaps had a signal mounted on top. The earthworks could alternatively be associated with a drainage mill or similar structure, however there are no obvious drainage channels leading towards the mound. Although it is possible traces of such a feature have been destroyed by the construction of the railway to the immediate south of the mound. Although it is also located to the immediate east of an area of earthworks that also pre-date the railway (NHER 32268) and it is possible that it is associated with this site, see 32268 for discussion.

The mound is slightly sub-circular and is approximately 12m across. An angular pit has been cut into the top of the mound, forming an oblong recession, 5m by 3m, with a slot coming off. Within the centre of the pit is a projecting feature, possibly the remains of signal post or a structure associated with drainage.
