Full Description
July 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a group of post medieval hollows, probably associated with drainage, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) within the grounds of The Grange (NHER 15090). The site is centred on TM 4497 9554. These earthworks obviously pre-date the railway, which cuts through the eastern edge of the site, and are likely to be associated with landscaping and drainage works carried out in the sixteenth century when the Grange was constructed.
The channels vary in width from 2.5m to 5m across. The western channel runs from the edge of the railway to the southwest and feeds into a pond and joins an existing boundary to the south. However the earthworks suggest that this channel originally continued round to the southeast, following a more curvilinear course. The eastern linear hollow also follows this curvilinear route. These drainage channels are located at the southwestern end of narrow inlet coming in off broad valley to the north.
