Full Description
July 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of multi-period ditched cropmarks, the majority of which are field boundaries of unknown date, is visible on aerial photographs within arable and grass surrounding The Grove and Marsh Lane, Aldeby (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4515 9511. Two slightly more coherent groups of field boundaries within the extent of this site have been recorded separately (NHER 44871-2).
The majority of these cropmarks represent fragmentary linear ditches, mostly interpreted as former field boundaries of unknown date, although many of are likely to be late prehistoric to Roman in date. The most extensive linear within the site is 143m long and runs from TM 4515 9520 to TM 4515 9505. The rest of the ditches are more much more fragmentary or represent shorter sections of ditch.
Some of the vegetation marks mapped to the immediate east of The Grove were visible within grass (S2). It must be noted that the grass does not look particularly parched and it is not high summer, suggesting that the marks may not be sub-surface archaeological features showing through due to adverse conditions. It is therefore possible that the marks have a more recent origin.
S. Massey (NMP), 21 July 2006.
