Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a faint cropmark on an aerial photograph (S1), centred at TG 4181 1612. Given that it is only visible on one photograph, it is impossible to tell for certain whether it represents a genuine archaeological feature or whether it is merely the product of recent agricultural activity. Other ring ditches visible in this area, such as NHER 21839 140m to the south, have been interpreted as the remains of Bronze Age round barrows. A similar interpretation is possible for the site described here, although its rather low-lying position adjacent to a canalised watercourse perhaps argues against this. Alternatively, it might be an agricultural feature of more recent origin, such as a stack stand.
The ring ditch is incomplete but appears to be roughly circular in shape, measuring approximately 17m in diameter. It should be noted that due to an inadequate number of control points, the photograph could not be properly rectified and this may have had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 16 August 2006.
