Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Short lengths of ditch and several possible pits are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 4188 1605. They lie close to the former course of Shallam Dyke (now canalised), the past extent of which is visible as cropmarks that have not been mapped by the NMP. Several of the ditches mirror the outline of this watercourse, and they may all be associated with the drainage of the surrounding area. They are not obviously associated with any of the phases of activity evident amongst the cropmarks to the south (NHER 44936) but could be contemporary with some of them. The pit-like marks, the archaeological origin of which is uncertain, are also undated. If they are genuine pits they could relate to extraction of some kind, or they could even be associated with the nearby ring ditches of probable prehistoric date (NHER 21839), perhaps marking the location of votive or ceremonial deposits (compare NHER 44906, for example).
It should be noted that due to an inadequate number of control points, this part of the photographs could not be properly rectified; this may have had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 16 August 2006.
