Full Description
Lakenham Middle School, formely Lakenham Council School.
Established 1913 on site vacant except for group of structures in southeast corner which were demolished. School laid out on right angled plan; at junction of Hall Road and Smithfield Road a two storey corner block formed the entrance with moulded brick pilasters and pediment, and letters 1913 LAKENHAM COUNCIL SCHOOL below brick mullioned window. To each side extended single story classroom blocks with open truss roofs, full height windows to road, but two-stage windows to rear, the lower sections covered by conservatories. A third range ran south from the north side to form the east side of the playground, with two hipped roof structures at its south end resembling malt kilns. In line with entrance an assembly hall projected to the southeast into the playground. Small additional structure at south end of west wing, and a further right-angled gabled projection at east end of north wing – these may be later additions. An unusual and innovative plan used elsewhere in Norwich.
To be demolished in 2006/7 but the entrance may be preserved.
Full photographic survey (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 1 July 2006.
This site is now occupied by Lakenham Primary School
This new through-age primary school was opened in 2007. It was built on the site of the Lakenham Council School, built in 1914 but not opened until after the First World War. During the war it was a hospital for wounded soldiers. After World War Two it became Lakenham Junior School, in the 1970s Lakenham Middle School, and was demolished in 2005.
D. Gurney (HES), 21 December 2010.
