Map

Site of small cottage of three bays and two storeys dated 1888 FHW. To one side is a strange sub-Gothick single storey L shaped extension in red brick with huge chimney. This did not appear to be of earlier date yet a house here is marked on (S1) standing within Up Wood. The style of the main cottage appeared nearer 1828 than 1888. The date of (S1) is usually given as 1883 but various sheets were issued at different times. So does the plaque mark some other event such as change of ownership rather than construction; or is the lower block older; or is this sheet of (S1) post-1888?
Building demolished 2003 and new house made on site.
NB Upwood Lodge just to west in Baconsthorpe parish dates only from 1964.
E. Rose (NLA), 5 July 2006.
