Full Description
Survey by C.C. Taylor (RCHM) on 10 February 1970.
Moat, stream fed, rectangular, causeway and earthworks to north.
Sunken way leading out to east.
A. Rogerson (NAU), January 1976.
This seems almost certainly the moat described in (S1) under Stanford (previously searched for in vain under old maps of Stanford) as in a field containing a modern house called Mortimers and the poor house, visible as a cropmark, 'south of the river'.
Despite the fact that this moat is just on the north bank of the river and is more than a cropmark, the location near Mortimers Farm seems to indicate this is the site meant; see also NHER 5064. Said by (S3) to be the site of Mortimers manor. (formerly numbered NHER 13200).
E. Rose (NAU), 18 November1985.
19 April 1976. Ordnance Survey air photography.
Earthworks.
Moat.
D. Voisey (NAU).
Copy of schedule (S4) in file.
October 2003. Visit.
Access bridge broken, this could present a problem when moat water-filled, may be reinstated. Some scrub including elder and thorn. This will be controlled. If machinery is used, care will be taken to avert damage to the site.
H. Paterson (A&E), 19 February 2004.
