Summary

An earthwork bank about 90cm high was noted in 1975. It runs along the west side of Long Belt and the south side of Hundred Acre Wood. The bank is thought to show the original boundary of the woods, as marked on a map of 1820.

Map

Trench for water main cut through bank 90cm (3 feet) high, which runs along west side of Long Belt; double bank and ditch also along south side of Hundred Acre Wood. Bank consists completely of topsoil, with old tree stumps. No ditch in section; 7.6cm (3 inches) topsoil above natural sand. No disturbance where trench passed south of old pit west of bank. Bank probably original boundary of wood; shown as 'Sandy Hill Wood' and 'Plantations' on Bryant's map of the 1820s, but not on (S1).
