Summary

A complex of Roman pits were excavated and Roman pottery including two stamped samian vessels were found. Further excavation uncovered evidence for a Roman settlement. Roman drainage ditches, a wattle and daub structure, two cremation inhumations and an amphora in a latrine pit were recorded. Ditched rectangular structures probably relating to the settlement can be seen on aerial photographs. Prehistoric worked flints, a Middle Bronze Age copper alloy axe and a Neolithic barbed and tanged arrowhead have also been found suggesting there was earlier prehistoric activity on the site. The western area was used as a prisoner of war camp in 1917 and much of the site has now been destroyed by the construction of a new dyke and road.
