Full Description
1964. Stray Find (c. 2; TL 6940 9060).
Late Bronze Age fragment of copper alloy found.
Pre 1980 Stray Find (c. 3; TL 6941 9063).
Neolithic and Beaker flints found. Previously recorded as NHER 14622.
18 December 1984. Fenland Project fieldwalking.
Several discrete concentrations of material identified:
Site FWL BE (c. 1; general scatter).
Odd flints scattered over field although several came from about TL 6944 9051, not enough to form a real concentration. Also sherds of post-medieval pottery.
Site FWL 60 (c. 4; TL 6940 9054).
On side of ridge. Sparse to moderate spread of flint with sparse 'pot boilers' and odd fragments of bone. Min dimensions 31m E/W x 30m N/S. Worked flints predominantly Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, although a small number of Early Neolithic pieces were also identified.
Site FWL 61 (c. 5; TL 6940 9066).
On ridge. Sparse but locally moderate spread of flint and 'pot boilers' with several bone fragments. Max dimensions 52m E/W x 47m N/S. Although the worked flints were predominantly Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age there was some indication that this was a composite site, with a number of potentially Mesolithic/Early Neolithic pieces also identified.
Site FWL 62 (c. 6; TL 6945 9067).
On ridge, particularly on its south side. Moderate to abundant spread of 'pot boilers' with a few flints. Max dimensions 32m E/W x 25m N/S. Worked flints not closely datable.
Site FWL 63 (c. 7; TL 6947 9068).
On low ridge. Sparse concentration of flints with a few 'pot boilers' and fragments of bone. Min dimensions 22m N/S x 15m E/W. Worked flints not closely datable.
For further details see project archive (S1) and final publication (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 2 September 2013.
1987. Fenland Project Fieldwalking.
Site FWL ES (c. 8).
Western half of field walked. Small number of flints recovered (not closely datable). This site is not listed in the final publication.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 2 September 2013.
1990. Stray Find.
Found north-west of Poppylot Bridge at [1] (Context 9):
1 Neolithic part-polished flint axehead. See sketch (S3) and notes on reverse.
1 Neolithic stone axe hammer. See sketches (S4). Petrology identified as medium-grained quartz dolerite: typical Gp XVIII Whin Sill (No. N309).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2015.
