NHER 46945 (Building record) - Westgate House, 42 Chapel Street

December 1951. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"House, now offices. Early 18th century with an early 19th-century façade. Brown brick with red brick returns. Slate roof, plain tiled to rear wing. Two-storey asymmetrical façade. Central panelled door within panelled reveals and below a four-vaned fanlight. Doorcase of engaged fluted Tuscan columns supporting an open pediment...Modillion timber eaves cornice below gabled roof, which has two distinct pitches, the southern higher. Ridge stack at division of pitches, internal south gable-end stack and an added external stack to the north gable. Original gable-line of early 18th-century house is apparent here, of one storey, probably with a dormer attic. To rear on south side is a two-storey plain tiled block; sash windows with glazing bars; stack on rear roof slope to south."

It should be noted that this building was previously also recorded as NHER 45484, a record that has now been revoked (and which erroneously stated that No 42 Chapel Street had been demolished).

Survey by Building Survey by Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
Red brick house that originated in the 18th century but that was substantially altered in the early 19th century, when the north section was added. The southern part of the house is the earliest.
Internally few rooms retain many early features. The stair has a square baluster and fluted pilasters.
