Summary

A pair of early 19th century two storey carstone and pale brick houses within a terrace. Of similar design, they have in their centre a painted plaster clasped hand, below which are three roundels, containing respectively a sheaf of corn, an anchor and a plough, also of painted plaster.

Pair of houses within a terrace. Early 19th century. Irregularly coursed carstone with gault-brick dressings. Roof of concrete corrugated tiles. Two storeys, irregular bays, No.114 with wider front. Central doors under round arches, 20th century flat-topped timber porch to 114, gabled similar porch to No.116. No.114 with one pointed-arched casement right and left (the former boarded), No.116 with a similar window to right only. One identical casement to first floor of each. Evenly spaced under eaves are four gault-brick blind slit lights. In the centre is a painted plaster clasped hand. Immediately below are three roundels containing (left to right) a sheaf of corn, an anchor and a plough, all of painter plaster. Gabled roof with ridge stack at division of properties, and end-stacks shared with adjoining houses.

These cottages may be linked via the painted plaster roundels to the pair of cottages immediately to the south (NHER 62884), one of which has similar plaques on its façade. According to (S3) the plaster symbols may be associated with a mutual friendly society or similar. (S3) also suggests that these are probably fishermen's or agricultural workers' cottages. They are not visible on (S4) but do appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map (S5).
