Summary

A range of prehistoric find were recovered in this field during the 1950s, including a Mesolithic microlith, Neolithic arrowheads, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead and a Middle Bronze Age copper alloy rapier. Additional finds were found when the field was ploughed in 1966, including worked flints, pieces of Beaker pottery and Roman pottery sherds. Fieldwalking undertaken as part of the Fenland Project identified several scatters of worked and burnt flint. One of the worked flints scatters was of predominantly later Neolithic date and two appeared to be Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. A possible Mesolithic core, animal bone fragments and two sherds of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery were also recovered. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting in this field since 1992 has recovered a range of additional prehistoric objects, including undatable, Mesolithic, Early Neolithic, and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age worked flints; stone objects, including an unfinished mace and a saddle quern; undatable, Beaker and ?Iron Age pottery sherds; a polished bone object and a Bronze Age copper alloy rapier fragment. A Roman coin has also been found.
