Establishing the location and status of this building was far from staightforward. Due to an erroneous grid reference recorded in an earlier version of the Listing Description this record was originally mapped as a point at TF 91712 44104 (out to sea!). Although this was subsequently corrected, the grid reference now recorded by (S1) (TF9165243641) places the designation (still active at the time of writing) on a square modern building that didn't exist in 1974. Further confusion comes from the fact that the Images of England picture attached to (S1) is of an unrelated building at TF 9164 4373, nearly 100m to the north. As no extant structure in the vicinity of Gamblers Square can be matched to the Listing Description it has been concluded that the building in question is actually now demolished. The most likely candidate is a north-to-south aligned block that lay on the western side of Gamblers Square, adjacent to Newgate Lane. Cartographic evidence suggests this building was still present in the 1970s but gone by the end of the 20th century. This record has therefore been mapped to the footprint of this building.
