Map

Various objects recovered from former OS field 423A (Curtis Field 62).

RECENT DISCOVERIES IN THIS AREA ARE RECORDED UNDER NHER 49859 [10].

1946. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis at [1]:
1 Late Bronze Age socketed axe. Information from (S1). Also listed in (S4). Previously recorded as NHER 5422.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

1948. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis at [2]:
1 Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead (Coll. No. 15). Photographed by NCM.
This object is listed as a ?Neolithic axe in (S4) but identified in R. Jacobi's records (S5) as a Mesolithic tranchet axe/adze. Although catalogued as being from Curtis Field 61 (O.S field 423, immediately to the north) the grid reference recorded places it in this field (O.S field 423A).
Previously recorded as NHER 14742.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 August 2014.

1948-1964. Stray Find.
Curtis' catalogue lists a number of additional finds that were also found in this field (F62), but for which little additional information is given. The worked flints listed in (S3) and (S4) are as follows:
4 Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads.
3 Neolithic axes.
1 borer.
1 'saw'.
1 'blunt back'.
1 fabricator.
Also 1 bone/antler 'needle'.
A number of these finds were previously recorded as NHER 14743.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

29 May 1949. Stray Find.
Two prehistoric objects found by F. Curtis at [3] (or nearby):
1 Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead (Coll. No. 8). This object is listed as a ?Neolithic axe in (S4) but identified in R. Jacobi's records (S5) as a Mesolithic tranchet axe/adze.
1 Neolithic polished stone axehead (Coll. No. 12). Weathered, petrology N168. Information from (S2). Also listed in (S3) and (S4). Previously the only find recorded as NHER 5314.

Although these finds are listed in Curtis' catalogue as coming from this field it should be noted that the grid reference given ([4]) would place them in the field to the east (O.S 424; Curtis Field 63).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

1950. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis:
1 Early Neolithic leaf arrowhead (or laurel leaf). Identified by F. Healy (NAU). Information from (S4).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

1964. Stray Find.
Found by [5] at [6]:
1 flint knife. Listed in finder's catalogue. Information from (S2). As noted by F. Healy (NAU) in (S4), the sketch on the reverse of (S2) suggests it was probably a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knife. Previously recorded as NHER 5328.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

1965. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis:
1 Mesolithic tranchet axehead. Information from (S2). Photographed by NCM. Identified by R. Jacobi and described in (S5).
Although recorded in Curtis' catalogue as coming from this field the grid reference given ([7]) would place this discovery to the west (in the vicinity of NHER 14741). As Healy notes in (S4) it is probable that two numbers were transposed and that the actual grid reference is [8].
Previously also recorded under NHER 14741.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.

Pre 1981. Stray Find.
Several worked flints recovered by [9] including:
1 flake (Coll. No. 412).
2 blades (Coll. Nos 646, 647).
Identified by F. Healy (NAU). Information from (S4).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
