Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of an enclosure or field of unknown or possible Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3827 9283. A cropmark of a complete enclosure or field is located at TM 3829 9285. It has a rectangular plan with internal dimensions of 25m by 52m. This enclosure lies on a west northwest to east southeast axis and is crossed by the Kirby Cane and Stockton parish boundary. The ditches forming the sides of the enclosure all continue beyond its extent, suggesting that it forms just one part of a larger complex. Most notably the ditch on its western side continues for 35m to the south southwest revealing the minimum width of the enclosure or field to the south. A 102m long section of linear ditch cropmark is present on a parallel alignment 26m to its west and is likely to be part of the same complex. Although the date of these cropmarks is not certain, they lie 150m to the northeast of the site of a Roman building (NHER 23325) and could be related to it. Cropmarks of undated linear ditches are present to the northwest and northeast (NHER 45010).
