Summary

The Methodist Chapel was built on the site of the old workhouse in 1858, and is of red brick with a gault brick façade and a shaped gable.

Methodist chapel built on the site of a parochial chapel of the same name (NHER 5484) in 1858. Chapel on this site by 1824.

1972. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description Excerpt:
"Primitive Methodist Chapel. 1858 by J. A. Hillam. Red brick with gault brick façade and stone dressings. Slate roof. Façade in west gable to street. Two storeys in three bays, the centre bay broken forward. Stone rusticated quoins at all angles."

According to (S2) the chapel occupies part of the site (33m (108ft) by 18.3m (60ft)) of the Old Workhouse. Half the imposing frontage was purchased from Richard Munson of Walpole for £350 in May 1858. This building is described by (S2) as a commodious building capable of seating 800 hearers, was erected at a cost of £1643. The opening ceremony took place on 31 Marhc 1859. In 1892 the organ and organ loft were added.
